Political Assistant to the General Secretary

General responsibilities

  • Assist the General Secretary (GS) on general policy matters and horizontal dossiers
  • Act on behalf of the GS in case of the GS’s absence
  • Assist the GS with following-up the GS’s agenda

Key tasks

  • Attend meetings accompanied by or on behalf of the GS, prepare minutes and report to the relevant parties and bodies
  • Coordinate works and activities related to the General Policy department (e.g. communications, trainings, events, campaigns, research)
  • Execute research on and analyses of information and developments relating to the GS’s work and inform relevant parties
  • Draft interventions, briefing notes and attend, report and ensure the follow up of external meetings/conferences
  • Draft project proposals for EU-funding, act as project manager for those projects and prepare the project report for the European Commission
  • Draft circulars and other documents and follow-up deadlines relevant to the GS’s work
  • Prepare and organise meetings and activities (in Belgium and abroad)
  • Liaise with ETF and ITF Administration and Finance, as well as outside organisations where appropriate
  • Assist in contacts towards the ETF affiliates, ITF, EU institutions, ETUC and European Trade Union Federations

Person Specification

  • Be in the possession of a relevant university degree (e.g. Political sciences, European studies) or equivalent by experience
  • Previous experience at EU level, in an international environment or in the European trade union movement as well as knowledge of EU Institutions
  • Native standard of written and spoken English. Knowledge of one or more other languages is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills
  • Relevant administrative experience and skills with good knowledge of office software (Outlook, WORD, Excel, PowerPoint,…)
  • Experience with social media
  • Capacity to integrate in a small and multicultural team
  • Commitment to trade union values
  • Ability at all times to exercise discretion, diplomacy, judgement and initiative
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to react flexible and in a dynamic way to new challenges and tasks
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, often under pressure
  • Ability to multi-task, identify priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Availability to travel occasionally

We are ready to offer a permanent contract. Salary will be paid 13.92 times a year. Extra-legal advantages include lunch vouchers of € 7 and a subscription for the local public transport. We also offer hospital insurance and a complementary pension scheme.
