The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world leader in scientific research and at the forefront in the development of cutting-edge technologies.

Eileen Furlong, head of the Genome Biology Dept./Unit, is looking for a highly motivated, dynamic and well-organised individual with a strong scientific background to support scientific writing, communication, grant management, and other strategic initiatives on tasks related to research in the Furlong lab and the Genome Biology Unit.

The Genome Biology Unit contains 10 interdisciplinary groups studying the molecular mechanisms by which genetic information is expressed and regulated to yield diverse biological systems. We combine cutting edge, genome-wide approaches to systematically dissect and model complex processes going from genotype to phenotype. Research in the Furlong lab dissects fundamental principles of genome regulation during embryonic development, focusing on functional and organisational properties of the genome. Both the Unit and the Furlong lab are involved in many national and international collaborative research initiatives. The rich diversity and synergy within the Unit creates a very vibrant and supportive environment with a lively international community.

Your role

The successful candidate will support E. Furlong in communication and organisation of research within the Furlong group and the Unit, with a particular emphasis on scientific writing, reporting, and communication of activities and help to connect and showcase our research both internally and externally. S/He will interact tightly with EMBL administration (grant office and finance) and with representatives from collaborating research institutions.


  • Preparing documents, grant applications and presentations;
  • Administration and management of grant applications with internal and external partners;
  • Drafting documents and internal and external communications;
  • Collating information about the Unit’s activities, publications, training, networks;
  • Optimize public outreach and the visibility of the Unit via social media (twitter, facebook), webpage, media relations;
  • High level scientific writing – e.g. for web pages;
  • Assistance in recruitments;
  • Assistance in identifying, obtaining and coordinating new funding or networking opportunities;
  • Ad-hoc scientific administrative tasks to support the Unit head and the above.

You have

A Ph.D. in Life sciences is required, with research experience in the general area of the lab’s research (transcriptional regulation, chromatin topology, developmental biology) is desired. Excellent skills and track record in scientific writing is essential, targeting both specialists (detailed level) and generalists (high-level). Training and/or experience in scientific communication is an advantage.

The ideal candidate should have outstanding writing and communication skills in English, an understanding and interest in biological topics in the broad area of genome biology, and have the ability to operate with flexible working styles. (S)he should be capable of communicating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. The successful candidate will have strong organizational skills, be self-motivated, have the ability to work independently, but yet have an interactive friendly personality. An international mindset, with the flexibility and organisational skills to manage multiple priorities in a goal-orientated environment is a must.

You might also have

  • Training and/or experience in scientific project management is an advantage;
  • German is not essential, but would be a plus.
